Established in July 2019, ITBR is an independent research institution affiliated with Fudan University and based on Shanghai Medical College, the State Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology, and the Ministry of Education Frontiers Center of Brain Science. It is dedicated to both basic and translational research in the field of neuroscience. Professor Duan Shumin, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, serves as the first dean.
The research areas of the Institute include: in the field of basic research, it is committed to clarifying the mechanisms of neural signal processing, the development and plasticity of brain structure and function, neural circuit analysis of brain function and its regulatory mechanisms, the mechanisms of brain diseases and neural regulation interventions, etc; In the field of translational research, it integrates neuroscience with disciplines such as medicine, pharmacy, engineering to establish cross-disciplinary and mutually integrated platforms and mechanisms, in order to meet the national major strategic needs. It is dedicated to the development of cutting-edge technologies in neuroscience, and their application to basic research in neuroscience, brain function regulation, artificial intelligence, and the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases.
Since its establishment, the Institute has made a series of significant progress. It has been approved for nearly 100 research projects and has undertaken many major national and provincial research tasks, including 10 projects approved by the China Brain Project, with a total research funding exceeding 160 million yuan. The Institute has achieved a series of obvious accomplishments in basic and clinical neuroscience, publishing 28 high-quality papers as first or corresponding author in renowned international journals such as Nature, Cell, Nature Biomedical Engineering, and Nature Communications. The Institute participates in the construction of the National Key Laboratory of Medical Neurobiology and the Ministry of Education Frontiers Center for Brain Science, and the experimental platform has been preliminarily established and put into use. These technical platforms strongly support the high-level scientific research.
ITBR participates in the Shanghai high-level local university construction plan, including the constructions of first-class and peak-discipline of basic medicine. ITBR has implemented academic special zone policies in talent introduction and operational management. ITBR vigorously introduces outstanding high-level talents from home and abroad. Currently, 26 independent research groups are operating efficiently, and the institute has the qualification to independently enroll graduate students as a research-oriented entity. ITBR has established a cross-disciplinary talent training model and a system for graduate students to rotate and select mentors after admission. We have established a secondary discipline of "Neuroscience and Translational Medicine," and trained more than 90 graduate students. ITBR has a postdoctoral workstation and independently carries out postdoctoral recruitment and training work. There are currently more than 30 postdoctoral fellows, including 1 international recruit, 7 Shanghai Super Postdoctoral Fellow, 1 Shanghai Seeker, and 12 Fudan Super Postdoctoral Fellow. ITBR will rely on the rich clinical resources of Fudan University's affiliated hospitals, fully leverage the university’s advantages in both basic and clinical research, effectively enhance the original innovation ability of the scientific research team, actively respond to the major strategic needs of the country, and aim to build an internationally renowned scientific research institution with a focus on both basic and translational neuroscience.
ITBR is currently vigorously recruiting talented young researchers from overseas, and warmly welcomes them to join ITBR. For more detailed information, please visit the official website of the Institute at /en/Recruitment/Postdoctoral.htm.
